Yeah, the most common and probably for some people, only use of prayer, is when they need a favour from God. We fast and pray mostly because we want Him to do something for us. I want to tell you today that there is much more to the use of prayer.
This is quite well known; another use of prayer is for intercession. Intercession not just for your parents or siblings, but much deeper. We could talk about intercession for nations, for governments, for people, for the unsaved and lost. You know, nowadays, we spend much more time complaining on social media what we don’t like about this and that, forgetting that we could take them to God in prayer, just as we do our personal requests. You could also pray for your church leaders, your community, etc.
One very rare but very important use of prayer is for building up. Jude 1:20 – “But ye beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.” This implies speaking in tongues and praying as led by the Holy Spirit. I remember reading about the instructions God gave to Moses about the altar in Lev 6:12 – “ And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it … .” According to the book of Revelations, we have been made kings and priests unto our God. Prayer should be a continuous process accompanied with the Word.
There is a need for continuous prayers beyond just when we need material things and favours. All those truths and promises about the nature of a believer that you have searched out in the Bible and you are still yet to see their manifestation in your life, stay in the place of prayer for those things. Even when the English words have gone out of you to put these things to God, stay there, speaking in tongues, as the Spirit guides you (Rom 8:26). No, this is not the vain repetitions of the Pharisees that Jesus spoke about. Staying long with God in prayers helps us to refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the true knowledge of God; leading every though and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (2Cor 10:5).
In short, pray to BECOME, much more than just having! What is the essence of the Holy Ghost baptism? According to John G. Lake, It is for God to take possession of the inner spirit of man. It is the coming of God into the spirit of man – the infusion of the spirit of man and God. This is one other thing that makes Christianity stand out from other religions. And when we can do this, we’ll be able to see much more tangible manifestations of God through not just preachers and ministers, but also through lay men (career men) and thus, be able to bring more light to this thick darkness in our world.
PS: Your prayer life can be much more improved when you give diligence to the study of God’s Word.
